“Istiqbal and Improvisation” (1965) is a unique album in which Algerian pianist and composer Mustafa Scandrani improvised and varied the melodies of Andalusian folk songs on the piano. A masterpiece of pure, gentle, and clean music that transcends time. In Andalusian classical music, pianos derived from the West are at the bottom, and it seems that the work was treated as heresy due to the performance method that Scandolani pioneered. The reason for heresy is that a solo piano performance was impossible at an Andalusian music concert before this person, and no one else could think of performing “Istiqbal” (one of the styles of Andalusian court music) on the piano, and it is said that it caused controversy at the time. Algerian classical music is characterized by the integration of Eastern and Western cultures, with Andalusian court music, which originated from the Spanish Arab-Islamic dynasty, and Turkish classical music, and is influenced by Western/indigenous Africans/Jews. “Istiqbal” is a prelude to the court music suite style “Nauba (or nouva),” and there are several modes (forms). In this work, one mode is first performed and presented thematically, then variations are performed to form 1 set, and a total of 9 sets of modes are recorded. The appeal of this work, which is easy to understand, is how Orient/ Western/ Africa intersect gracefully on the keyboard, and the sound coming out of the piano moves as if going back and forth between the East and West worlds as a single delicate line.
