Ortofon's proud MM cartridge, the 2M series, boasts an extremely diverse lineup, from the entry model 2M Red to the flagship model 2M Black LVB 250, the monaural version 2M Mono, and the 2M 78, which is exclusively for 78 rpm SP discs, and has established itself as the standard for today's MM cartridges.
Consideration has also been given to the head shell mounting method, which is as simple as tightening two M2.5 diameter mounting screws directly into the mounting holes of the cartridge body, then wiring the lead wire and adjusting the position of the needle tip.
However, as a result of searching for a way to make it easier to use, we came to the conclusion that all models in the series should be commercialized with them attached to the head shell, and the 2M Premounted series was born.
2M 78 is an MM cartridge developed for playing SP records. SP records, which have existed since the era of the phonograph, have much thicker grooves than LPs and cannot be played with standard LP cartridges. This 2M 78 is equipped with a stylus tip specifically designed for SP records, allowing you to play SP records with extremely high sound quality.
Please note that the 2M 78 uses a diamond needle with a thick diameter specifically for SP discs, and cannot be used with LP/EP discs. LP/EP discs have a much narrower sound groove than SP discs, and you may not be able to trace the sound groove or the disc surface, so please never use the 2M 78 to play LP/EP records other than SP discs.
